Panel formed to determine fate of CET

CHENNAI: The State Government has set up a seven-member panel, headed by academic M. Anandakrishnan, to go into the issue of scrapping the common entrance test as a mode of admission to professional undergraduate courses. The panel has been constituted with a view to doing away with the CET from the academic year 2007-08, as it was found to be an unnecessary burden and the need was felt to create equal opportunities for both urban and rural students in the admissions, a release here said. The panel also includes the Secretaries of Law, Higher Education, Health and Family Welfare, apart from individual panelists K. Parthasarathy and C. Thangamuthu. The Commissioner of Technical Education will function as Member-Secretary. — Special Correspondent

District judges posted

CHENNAI: Ten District Judges, directly recruited in December 2004, have been posted to various sessions courts by the Madras High Court. According to a notification issued on Wednesday, N. Velu has been posted as VII Additional Judge, City Civil Court in Chennai. P. Velmurugan has been appointed I Additional District Judge in Madurai, while V. Ramamurthy is I Additional Judge in Tiruchi. G. Jayachandran is the new I Additional District Judge in Coimbatore. The other new appointments are: C.V. Karthikeyan, II Additional Judge-CBI Cases in Madurai; S. Kumaraguru, I Additional District Judge of Dharmapuri; Teekaa Raman, III Additional District Judge (PCR), Madurai; N. Sathish Kumar, I Additional District Judge (PCR), Thanjavur; G. Saravanan, II Additional District Judge (PCR), Tirunelveli; and N. Seshasayee, I Additional District Judge, Tirunelveli. — Special Correspondent

Anglo-Indian representative

CHENNAI: Oscar C. Nigli will represent the Anglo-Indian community in the State Assembly. A release issued here by the Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said the Governor had nominated Dr. Nigli. — Special Correspondent

IT raids

MADURAI: Income tax officials raided the premises of a major automobile dealer in various districts and seized unaccounted cash and valuables worth over Rs. 1 crore. Under the directions of Additional Director of Income Tax (Investigation) P. Selva Ganesh, two teams led by Assistant Directors Vincent Sankyaraj and M. Rajan conducted the raids on the establishments of the group in Chennai, Vellore, Tiruchi, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts. Incriminating documents and deposits were also seized. — Staff Reporter

Three die in accident

KANCHEEPURAM: Three persons died and five were injured in a road accident at Oragadam on the Wallajabad-Padappai Road on Wednesday. According to police, the accident occurred at around 11-30 a.m. when a van bound for Tambaram from Wallajahbad knocked down commuters waiting at the Oragadam bus stop. The van driver, while trying to overtake a sand-laden lorry, spotted another vehicle coming in the opposite direction and to avoid collision, he swerved the vehicle to the left, knocking down commuters waiting at the bus stop. While, Munusamy died on the spot, Sekar and Manikandan were declared dead on arrival at the Government Hospital, Sriperumbudur. — Staff Reporter

Village to be adopted

PUDUKOTTAI : The Rotary Club of Pudukottai will adopt Sembattuviduthi and will implement various projects for the village's overall development, said S. Prithiviraj, installed as the president of the club for 2006-07, at a function held here recently. Installing the officer-bearers, the former Rotary district governor C. Basker, urged them to sustain their service for the poor.

The Director of Distance Education, Alagappa University, Karaikudi, S. Sudalaimuthu distributed sewing machines for economically challenged women and uniforms and school bags to 20 school children. Awards were also given to the district toppers in Plus Two and SSLC examinations.

The secretary, R. Rajasekaran and the treasurer C. T. Sundaram also spoke.

The following were installed as the new office-bearers: president: S. Prithiviraj, vice-president: N. Mohammed Nazar, secretary: R.Rajasekaran, joint secretary: K. Soundararajan, and treasurer: C. T. Sundaram.

Announcement hailed

TIRUCHI : The Sugathara Paarvaiyalar Sangam welcomed the announcement of the Government that steps will be taken to fill vacancies of doctors and nurses in the health and family welfare department. A resolution was adopted at the annual meeting of the Tiruchi district unit of the Sangam held here on Monday.

AIR programme

The Tiruchi station of the All India Radio will broadcast a live programme `Ulaga kaal pandhatta potti - oru countdown', an interview with veteran football player D. Mohana Sundaram on July 6 at 7 a.m.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 105.65 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 30,392 cusecs and the outflow 7,384 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.

Youth detained under Goondas Act

Tuticorin: Jawahar Ali (21) was detained on Wednesday under Goondas Act following an order from Collector R. Palaniyandi.

The accused was involved in various cases of extortion, snatching and possession of explosives under South and Central police station limits over the last few years.

Rs 1.96 lakh stolen from car

ERODE: A sum of Rs 1.96 lakh kept in a car was stolen here on Tuesday. According to the police, Rajendran, a doctor of Sakthinagar here parked the car on Mettur Road and went shopping. When he returned, he found the cash bag missing. - Staff Reporter

Allotment of more kerosene

ERODE: Public Distribution System (PDS) cardholders who had not bought the additional quantity of kerosene allotted in June can now avail themselves of the facility until July 15 from respective PDS outlets, says a release from the Collector. An additional two litres was given to residents of district headquarters and municipalities, and one litre to residents of village panchayats. - Staff Reporter

Two killed in accidents

SALEM: Two persons were killed in two different accidents in the district on Tuesday.

In Kondalampatti, Sivakumar (29) of Arisipalayam was killed when his car dashed against a lorry. The lorry, which lost control, dashed against the wall of a house in the roadside. However, no one in the house was injured. The Kondalamapatti Police registered a case.

In another accident at Thammampatti, Nallathambi of Somampatti, cleaner of a lorry, was killed on the spot when the lorry lost control and dashed against a roadside tree. The Thammampatti Police registered a case.

Found dead

SALEM: A 24-year-old woman was found dead with burns under mysterious circumstances in Periya Kinaru in Ammapet on Wednesday. The police said the deceased was identified as Chandra. The Ammapet police registered a case.

Illegal use of LPG for cars

SALEM: The Food Cell personnel registered cases against five persons for reportedly using the domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas for cars.

The police said the personnel conducted a vehicle check up in various parts of the district and found five persons using the domestic LPG cylinders for the cars. Cases were registered against them.
