JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Agricultural University in Bikaner has established a direct link with the National Information System on Agricultural Education Network in India (NISAGENET) to provide to students, academicians and researchers the latest information on various aspects of higher education in agriculture. The web-based online link was established at a function in the university premises on Tuesday. Vice-Chancellor Parmatma Singh, inaugurating the link, said it would provide answers to queries about characteristics of agricultural institutions, colleges under different universities, teaching programmes, infrastructure facilities, manpower in agricultural universities and information on research and development.

The R&D information available on NISAGENET deals with the university research funding, university-wise distribution of projects, technologies developed and publication of papers and journals. Prof. Singh said the wide range of information available at a single place on the network would immensely benefit the students.

P.L. Gupta of the Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute, New Delhi, said the NISAGENET had the facilities of updating, retrieval and dissemination of information at the national level. He said the system was capable of maintaining an up-to-date agricultural education data bank.

NISAGENET was started in January 2005 as a three-year project after approval by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The project was launched with the Central Government emphasising the need for compilation of statistics for various policies and planning purposes for the educational and manpower programmes in the country.
