LUCKNOW: In a significant order, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday stayed the Uttar Pradesh government's decision to appoint Provincial Civil Services (PCS) officers as district magistrates. A division bench of Justices Pradeep Kant and Rajeev Sharma passed the stay in response to a petition filed by the state IAS Association secretary Sanjay Bhusreddy that challenged the government order in this regard. The court said as an interim measure, no non-cadre officer would be posted on any cadre post until further orders. Fixing July 25 for further hearing of the matter, the court issued notices to the Union government and Hathras District Magistrate Ajai Agarwal, a PCS officer who was appointed to the post by the state government. Bhusreddy had sought quashing of the government order and a direction to the state government not to appoint non- cadre officers to cadre posts, besides challenging Agarwal's appointment. Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav recently announced at a function of the PCS officers association that they would also be appointed as DMs. The state IAS Association had expressed its resentment at this decision. - PTI
