No decision on daily wage workers

BANGALORE: The Government has sought time to decide on regularisation of services of 17,000 daily wage employees in various departments. Replying to Vatal Nagaraj (Kannada Chaluvali) in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, Minister for Home Affairs M.P. Prakash said regularisation of services of daily wage employees would have implications on the State's finances. Legal issues were involved, he added. Mr. Nagaraj wanted the Government to withdraw an order issued by Chief Secretary B.K. Das on removal of daily wage employees from service. Mr. Prakash said he was unaware of the order. — Special Correspondent

Announcement on salary in 20 days

BANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy assured the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday that the Government would decide on increasing the salary of 350 temporary employees of the University of Mysore in 20 days. Replying to a demand made by members, he said he had discussed the issue with Higher Education Minister D.H. Shankaramurthy.

Siddaramaiah's move termed unfortunate

BANGALORE: The State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has termed "unfortunate" the decision of members of the All-India Progressive Janata Dal group led by former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to join the Congress. In a statement to the press, S.Y. Gurushant, member, State Committee of the CPI(M), said it was not right on the part of members of the group to join the Congress as Mr. Sidaramaiah had fought against the Congress for several years. He said the Congress's policies were against the interests of Dalits, backward classes and the poor. — Special Correspondent

Plea to reappoint Venkatachala

Bangalore: Karnataka State Human Rights Council president Vivekananda on Wednesday urged the Government to reappoint N. Venkatachala as Lokayukta. He said that during his term, Mr. Venkatachala disposed of 31,714 complaints registered under the Karnataka Lokayukta Act, raided 1,126 places and charge-sheeted 1,000 officials. To pressure the Government to reappoint Mr. Venkatachala, the council will organise a public programme at Mythic Society, Nrupatunga Road, on July 10 from 5.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. Eminent personalities would participate, Mr. Vivekananda said. — Staff Reporter

Transfer of police official opposed

BANGALORE: Bharatiya Janata Party leaders from Bellary district are up in arms over the "sudden transfer" of Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Thakur and demanded that Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy revoke it immediately. President of the party's district unit and MLC Janardhana Reddy and other leaders have criticised Minister for Home M.P. Prakash, who is from the district, for the transfer. Mr. Reddy and the others suspected in the transfer the hand of the mining and "matka" gambling lobbies.

AIPJD meet in Mysore on Saturday

MYSORE: The All-India Progressive Janata Dal (AIPJD) has convened a meeting of party workers and supporters from the Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency at the Dasara Exhibition Grounds in Mysore on Saturday. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, AIPJD leader and vice-president of the Mysore Zilla Panchayat K. Marigowda said the convention was aimed at eliciting the opinion of people from the constituency on the invitation extended to former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to join the Congress. Mr. Siddaramaiah will inaugurate the convention. AIPJD president C.M. Ibrahim will preside over the function. — Staff Correspondent

Woman sentenced to two-year jail term

DAVANGERE: The court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class here has sentenced a woman to imprisonment for two years in a cheating case. Jabeena Banu of SPS Nagar here was convicted for cheating a woman after promising to find her a job and collecting money. The court imposed a fine of Rs. 2,000 on Jabeena Banu. The Gandhinagar police had arrested her on the basis of a complaint by Saraswathi.

Increase in demand for seeds

Bidar: The Government's policy of providing 75 per cent subsidy on seeds has got encouraging response, and supply of seeds has increased by 20 per cent this season, Agriculture Minister Bandeppa Kashempur told the Legislative Council in response to a question from Quazi Arshad Ali.

The Government had estimated the demand for seeds from small and marginal farmers at 4.66 lakh quintals.

However, the Karnataka State Seeds Corporation supplied 5.59 lakh quintals of seeds to farmers in 27 districts, the Minister said. In Bidar district, the demand for seeds was estimated at 16,906 quintals. There was scarcity of black gram and green gram in few areas in Bidar and Gulbarga districts, and the Government had taken steps to address the issue, Mr. Kashempur said. — Staff Correspondent

Anniversary celebration

Udupi: The 10th anniversary celebration of the literary organisation, Suhasam, will be held here on Sunday. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, president of the organisation Shantharaj Aithal said the Medical Education Minister and Minister in charge of Udupi district V.S. Acharya would inaugurate the celebrations. A "humour meet" and special lectures would be organised on the occasion. H. Dundiraj, poet, would be chief guest. The valedictory address would be delivered by Muralidhar Upadhyaya Hiriyadka, writer, he said.

Seminar

Tumkur: Shivakumaraswami Centre for Management of Rural Development (SCMRD) of the postgraduate department of management studies of the Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Tumkur, will organise a two-day seminar on "Rural entrepreneurship development-challenges and opportunities" here from Friday.

SCMRD coordinator H.V. Hirannaiah, said in a press release here on Wednesday that Abdul Aziz, honorary visiting professor of the Institute of Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, will inaugurate the seminar at 9.30 a.m.

N.R. Jagadish, managing director of Siddaganga Oil Extraction Ltd., will speak. Eighteen papers will be presented at the technical sessions, he said.

Dharna

BELLARY: Mayor G. Somashekar Reddy, and other BJP leaders in the city staged a dharna on Wednesday seeking cancellation of transfer order of Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Thakur. In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, he said Mr. Thakur had taken steps to combat anti-social activities, including illegal mining, mafia and naxalite activities and ensured law and order in the district. He said that if the transfer order was not withdrawn, an agitation would be launched. Activists of VHP and ABVP extended support to the dharna.

Youth dead

BIJAPUR: A youth was killed and another injured in an accident near Hosur Cross in Babaleshwar Police limits on Wednesday. Police gave the name of the deceased as Shivappa Halli (19), of Aratal village in Athani taluk. Bheerappa, who was riding the motorcycle, was injured. Halli was riding pillion.

Killed in accident

Raichur: Four persons, including a two-year-old, were killed on the spot and 15 injured in a collision between a multi-utility vehicle and a tractor, in which they were travelling, on the State Highway-23 near Kapgal village in Manvi taluk on Tuesday night. The police identified the dead as Gudadoddi (9), son of Thimmanna; Bhramarambha (30), wife of Nagaraj; Sandeep (2), son of Nagaraj; and Huligaiah (20), son of Hanumantha. Raichur: The Raichur police recovered explosives packed in PVC pipes from a hillock near Korthakunda, a Naxal-prone border village in Raichur taluk, on Thursday. The Yapaldinni police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Woman dead

Raichur: Laxmi (21), wife of Sanna Lingappa, reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at her house in Uppal village in Sindhanur taluk on Tuesday. The Sindhanur Rural police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Commits suicide

Bidar: A 20-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in Bidar on Wednesday. Kavita married Chandrakant of Halladakeri village in Bidar taluk a year ago. She died at the district hospital where her in-laws admitted her on Tuesday night. In a complaint at the Market police station, Kavita's father said that his son-in-law and other members of his family used to torture her for money. Police registered a case of unnatural death. — Staff Correspondent

Stolen

Raichur: Gold and silver ornaments and cash, in all valued at Rs. 83,000, were stolen from the house of Dyavanna in Dhumathi village of Sindhanur taluk. The Balaganur police registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Nine schools for Bidar

Bidar: The State Government will open nine government high schools in Bidar district. These will come up in Eklur, Chimmegaon, Budhera, Gadagi, Ekamba, Dhannur, Kumar Chincholi, Kapparagaon, and Masimad. Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti said this in reply to a question in the Legislative Assembly by member Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli. — Staff Correspondent
