BMIC: Dharam Singh defends S.M. Krishna

BANGALORE: Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly N. Dharam Singh turned the tables on a few leaders in the House on Wednesday by questioning them about their role in promoting the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) project when they were Ministers in the past. He said it was the Janata Dal government which signed an agreement with Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises Ltd. (NICE)

Participating in a debate on the issue, Mr. Dharam Singh expressed concern that some persons were trying to cast aspersions on Maharashtra Governor and former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna and implying that the decision to go ahead with the project was a blunder. He said the government headed by him had a role in implementing the expressway project, and Home Minister M.P. Prakash and Public Works Minister H.D. Revanna were members of his Cabinet and had defended it.

Criticising the coalition of the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Bharatiya Janata Party for trying to blame the Congress, Mr. Dharam Singh said members of various Cabinets had decided in favour of the project. A Cabinet sub-committee headed by then Public Works Minister C.M. Udasi, who is now Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, had given a report defending the project. All formalities of the project were concluded in 1995 and 1998, and Mr. Krishna only implemented the agreement. The notification directing the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board to release land was issued by the then Janata Dal government in which Mr. Prakash was a Minister.

Criticising the Government for filing an application before the Supreme Court to review its judgment on the BMIC project, Mr. Dharam Singh said it had committed a mistake.
