NEW DELHI: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) organised a rally at Jantar Mantar here on Wednesday against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government's decision to disinvest in the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), the National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) and the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC).

Several other unions and industrial federations including AITUC, HMS, BMS, UTUC (LS), TUCC and AICCTU also took part in the protest. Addressing trade union workers and protestors, leaders said the fight against disinvestment would not remain limited to Orissa and Tamil Nadu but spread across the nation.

If the Union Government failed to desist itself from pursuing "path of privatisation", all trade unions would give a befitting reply to it by uniting workers against it, they added.

Extending support to the employees of NLC for their indefinite strike at Neyveli town, CITU leaders said workers were not happy with the Centre's decision to disinvest 10 per cent of its share in the Corporation. The Government would have to withdraw its decision otherwise the employees and people across the country would join their protest.

The NLC employees have been asserting the sale of NLC's shares was in gross violation of the UPA's "common minimum programme, they said, adding that other constituents of UPA should also pressurise the Centre on the issue.

Leaders of CITU and other unions pledged to support workers fighting against privatisation across the nation.
