DCC president resigns

Kakinada: East Godavari District Congress President Thota Narasimham MLA has announced his resignation to the party post on Wednesday taking responsibility for the party's miserable performance in his Jaggampet constituency. At a press conference, he said, though the party captured the Zilla Parishad he was not able to digest its poor performance in his constituency. - Correspondent

Student run over by bus

NIZAMABAD: A Class VIII student Kapil Dev (13) of Yedapally mandal headquarter was run over by an RTC bus near his school on Wednesday.

According to Sub-Inspector B. Sankaraiah the bus hit the victim when he was on the way to school, killing him on the spot. The bus driver has been arrested. - Staff Reporter

SCR announces train halts

HYDERABAD: South Central Railway has announced that passenger train no. 429/430 Machilipatnam-Visaskhapatnam-Machilipatnam will stop for a minute at Kaldhari on Bhimavaram-Nidadavolu section with effect from July 5. Train no. 429 will reach Kaldhari at 1.32 a.m. and in the return direction from Visakhapatnam it will reach Kaldhari at 1.31 a.m.

Also, train no. D 108 Machilipatnam-Vijayawada passenger will stop at Uppalur station on Vijayawada-Gudivada section at 4.41 a.m. - Staff Reporter

Course in hospital waste management

HYDERABAD: Indira Gandhi National Open University's regional centre here is offering a six-month programme in healthcare waste management, which has been jointly launched by IGNOU and WHO for professionals in South-East Asia. The programme is being offered in 16 hospitals across the country, including CARE and NIMS. The student handbook-cum-prospectus can be obtained from the Himayatnagar regional centre of IGNOU. July 31 is the last date for submitting applications. - Special Correspondent

GO on gratuity

HYDERABAD: The State Government has issued orders for payment of death-cum-retirement gratuity to judicial officers who retired after July 1, 1996, with a rider that it was subject to the outcome of the Supreme Court ruling later this month. GO 100 issued on Tuesday says if any excess payments were made they would be recovered during commutation of the pension and from DA if necessary. - Special Correspondent

CPI national council meet from tomorrow

HYDERABAD: The national council of CPI will meet here for three days from Friday to discuss, among other issues, the preparedness of the party to face elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Manipur next year. Ahead of the meeting, the 31-member national executive of the party will meet on Thursday. - Special Correspondent

Novel step towards transparency

TIRUPATI: In a bid to instil confidence among its employees (and prospective employees too) that it is for transparency, the TTD management took a novel step on Wednesday. Written examinations were conducted to fill three posts of Assistant Civil Surgeon in the TTD-run hospitals. The examiners decided to take up paper valuation immediately after the exams, that too in front of the 26 candidates who had taken the test. - Special Correspondent

Godavari gets flood flow

KHAMMAM: The Godavari received the first flood flow of the year on Wednesday. CWC sources said no flood forecast was received. The flow will recede after touching 41 feet on Thursday. It will not reach even the first warning level of 43 feet. - Staff Reporter

Narayana Naidu laid to rest

TIRUPATI: The mortal remains of former chairman of Andhra Pradesh College Service Commission M.D. Narayana Naidu was laid to rest in his native village Mallarapuvaripalle in KV Palle mandal of the district on Wednesday. Dr. Naidu, who also served as the director of SV University's NSS bureau for nearly two decades, had the distinction of organising several national and international training camps, which won accolades to the University from several top dignitaries. A keen social worker, he had also been a member of the Union Government's National Sanctioning Committee for Rural Development. He is survived by wife and two daughters. - Staff Reporter

Agriculture officer held on graft charge

Hyderabad: The Anti-Corruption Bureau officials on Wednesday arrested Agricultural Officer of Nandavaram mandal in Kurnool district R. Sadashiva Rao at the local Mandal Revenue Office on the charge of receiving Rs. 4,000 from a complainant. The tainted amount was recovered from the accused officer, the ACB officials said in a press release. He would be produced at a special court in Hyderabad. - Staff Reporter

V-C inaugurates mess blocks

TIRUPATI: SV University Vice-Chancellor S. Jayarama Reddy inaugurated the `C' and `E' mess blocks, attached to the College of Commerce, Management and Information Sciences, on its premises here on Wednesday.

In his interaction with students, Prof. Reddy assured to involve students in management of hostels and mess blocks to ensure better transparency and upkeep.

Fruit trees felled

ANANTAPUR: Some 550 sweet lime trees belonging to one Narayana of Krishnapuram village in Bukkapatnam mandal were allegedly chopped by his rivals within hours of his victory as the TDP MPTC candidate. In a complaint lodged with the police he suspected the hand of his political rivals in mowing the fruit trees. The fruit trees were found felled on Wednesday morning. - Staff Reporter

Three killed in road accident

ANANTAPUR: Three persons were killed and four others were injured when the lorry in which they were travelling hit a stationary lorry near Mallamma Kottala village in Mudigubba mandal on Wednesday. According to the police, the deceased were identified as Dasthagiri, (42), cleaner of the lorry, and two farmers from Bukkaraya Samudram Pedda Keshava Reddy, (60), and Narayana (40). - Staff Reporter
