Chandy urges PM to visit State

Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to visit the State and announce a relief scheme for the farmers on the lines of the Vidharbha package. He said that farmers in Wayanad, Palakkad, Idukki, Kasaragod and Alappuzha were facing a grave crisis as a result the fall in prices of commodities, drought and other reasons and were inching towards a debt trap. He wanted the Prime Minister to visit the areas where farmers had committed suicide in order to get a first hand knowledge of the intensity of the problem. - Special Correspondent

Fee Regulatory Committee

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has set up the Fee Regulatory Committee as per the provisions of the Kerala Professional Colleges or Institutions Act with the former Judge P.A. Mohammed as chairman to fix the fees of the self-financing educational institutions. The Secretary for Higher Education is its member secretary. The self-financing institution that feels that any change is necessary in the fee structure under the new law can submit its proposals to the committee. The proposals can be submitted till 5 p.m. on July 7. All self-financing institutions should immediately apprise the member secretary of the details required by the committee. The committee will meet on July 8, consider the proposals and take a decision.

SBT general manager

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Anjan Kumar Basu has joined State Bank of Travancore (SBT) as the general manager in charge of Commercial and Institutional/International Banking. Mr. Basu, who began his career in banking in 1976, has held several key posts in State Bank of India and its associate banks.

Telecom adalat

KOLLAM: The next telecom adalat of the Kollam Secondary Switching Area will be held during the second week of August. Grievances that could not be settled through the normal BSNL complaints redressal channel can be submitted. The copies of the original complaint should be sent to K. Gangadharan Pillai, Assistant General Manager, BSNL General Manager's Office, Kadappakada, Kollam-691008 on or before July 14. — Staff Reporter

College bags ranks

KOLLAM: Principal of Fatima Mata National College Soosamma Kavumpurath said the college had bagged seven ranks for the degree examinations of the University of Kerala this year. The first ranks bagged were for B.Sc. biotechnology, B.A. psychology and B.Sc. physics. The college bagged the second and third ranks for psychology and the third rank for maths. — Staff Reporter
