Chief Secretary is probing allegations of foul play on the part of some officials

  • Cabinet decides for inquiry into missing of spirit
  • P.V. Dinesh to be appointed as the State's standing counsel in Supreme Court
  • Government to look into Halcyon Castle issue

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Wednesday said here that he was yet to get the inquiry report of the Chief Secretary on the fax sent to the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions last month.

The fax, containing crucial communication from the Government on the issue of granting minority status to some of the self-financing professional colleges in the State, had not reached the Commission on time. The Government ordered an inquiry into the issue following allegations of foul play on the part of some officials.

    Missing spirit

The Chief Minister told mediapersons that Cabinet had decided to order an inquiry into the missing of a truckload of spirit while being transported to the State-owned Mannam Sugar Mills from outside the State. While there was record that the vehicle had begun its journey from a neighbouring State, the consignment had not reached the mill.

The Cabinet had decided to exempt the mill from paying an excise duty of Rs.70 lakhs on the spirit, as it had not received the same.

It had also decided to appoint P.V. Dinesh as the State's standing counsel in Supreme Court.

    Halcyon Castle issue

Mr. Achuthanandan said he had not known about what had happened in the Government property surrounding the Halcyon Castle at Kovalam near here recently.

"We will enquire about what has happened at Kovalam," the Chief Minister said. A controversy had erupted over the hotel group owning the former ITDC hotel at Kovalam removing some coconut trees from the disputed property and preventing construction work at a nearby police outpost.
