Crops estimated at Rs.28.8 lakhs destroyed in Kollam district

79 persons sheltered at three relief camps

KOLLAM: Incessant rain and strong wind has caused widespread damage in the eastern sectors of the district. On the western coast, the sea continued to be rough along the Mundakkal shore.

Seventy-nine persons have been sheltered at the three relief camps opened in the district. Forty-three houses in the district have been destroyed in the rain during the past three days.

At Mundakkal, the sea began turning rough on Tuesday night. Four houses on the seafront were partially washed away and another three are vulnerable. The disaster management units of the district administration and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) are engaged in rescue and relief operations in the area.

Along the Achencoil, Punalur, Thenmala and Kulathupuzha stretch of the eastern sector, many trees got uprooted in the wind. It resulted in traffic blocks and disruption of power supply at many places. Residents of Thenmala and Aryankavu said power supply to the areas remain disrupted since Monday. At nearby Kulathupuzha, power supply was partially restored on Wednesday. Flash flood and winds destroyed crops in the eastern sector. The district administration said crops estimated at Rs.28.88 lakhs have been destroyed in the rain.

Heavy rain and wind continued in the Central Travancore district for the third consecutive day on Wednesday.

Reports received here from different taluks showed that a total of 145 houses have been damaged in the natural calamity in different parts of the district in the past 24 hours.

According to an official statement, 1,514 houses have been partially damaged and 31 houses completely destroyed in the district during the ongoing monsoon season so far.

The district has received 2.5 cm rainfall from 8 a.m. on Tuesday to 8 a.m. on Wednesday, according to official sources. The forest areas of Konni have received 37 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours. The KSEB authorities have said that heavy rain has substantially increased the inflow into the reservoirs of the Sabarigiri and Kakkad hydel power projects in the forest areas.

The rivers, Pampa, Manimala and Achenkoil have been swollen due to heavy inflow from the catchment areas.
