Jayalalithaa's support to striking NLC staff

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Wednesday accused Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi of vacillation on the issue of disinvestment of equity of Neyveli Lignite Corporation.

In a statement, she said that while she had been opposing the Central Government's move to disinvest NLC shares from the beginning, Mr. Karunanidhi initially maintained silence. After the labour wings of several parties, including that of the AIADMK, announced an agitation, he too said his party would join the stir. Subsequently, when a delegation of trade unions leaders of NLC requested her to inaugurate a fast, he said the shares could be sold to NLC employees. However, the idea met with all-round opposition. Now, he has urged the Centre to drop the move. Blaming Mr, Karunanidhi for enacting a "drama," Ms. Jayalalithaa said she would stand by the NLC workers.
