Woman unaware of pregnancy till giving birth

Staff Reporter

Fathima had lost hope of bearing a child

TAMBARAM: A 43-year-old woman of Madipakkam was unaware of her pregnancy until giving birth to a child at a hospital last week.

Fathima and Fahim (names changed on request) were married 22 years ago and the childless couple had given up hope of bearing a child after nearly 10 years of infertility treatment.

A surprise, however, was awaiting them when last Sunday, Fathima came to the Saraswathy Speciality Hospital in Madipakkam complaining of acute stomach pain.

The attending doctor, K. Priyadarshini, suspected a pregnancy and ordered a scan.

The scan confirmed that Fathima was indeed pregnant, but she still refused to believe it.

"She believed it only after the child was born," Dr. Priyadarshini said.

The baby boy, weighing 2.9 kg, was born at 10 a.m., less than two hours after Fathima arrived at the hospital.

Fathima weighs 90 kg, and given her large body frame, she failed to identify the usual symptoms associated with pregnancy. "As she had lost hopes of bearing a child, it did not even strike her that she could become a mother," Dr. Priyadarshini remarked.
