Identifying day of the week made easy
Staff Reporter
Bangalore:
Can you tell which day of the week August 27, 2007 will be, and which day was February 5, 1980 without referring to a calendar? Unlikely. But Shivakumar (29), who lost his eyesight at the age of two as the result of an operation that went wrong, can.
Mr. Shivakumar, who did his schooling at The Ramanamaharshi School for Visually Impaired, graduated from Nijalingappa College, Bangalore. He has a master's degree in political science from Bangalore University. "I want students and people to benefit from my information," he says. He has the ability to remember telephone numbers. "I never refer to the telephone directory to dial a number," he says. Listening to the radio and commentary on sports channels on television are his hobbies.
Mr. Shivakumar follows certain steps to identify the day by date. Every month has a code. From 2000 to 2099, the code for January and October is 6, February, March and November is 2, April and July is 5, May is 0, June is 3, August is 1, September and December is 4.
Here is how he does it. Take the month code. Divide the last two digits of the year by 4. When the year ends with 00, 01, 02, and 03 take it as it is. Add the result to the given year. Add the date and month code and divide by 7. The reminder obtained will be the day of the week.
Mr. Shivakumar, who resides in Basaveshwaranagar, can be contacted on 080-23387498.
