Teams slug it out at the beach volleyball tourney on Necklace Road

HYDERABAD: Beach volleyball in Hyderabad? Well, sports lovers might be puzzled about the very idea considering that there is no seacoast around. But, diehard volleyball lovers are quite familiar with the local event played over the years on the banks of Musi at Victory Playground. And, to give the sport a new dimension and also lure thousands of people who assemble on the lawns of the picturesque Necklace Road, Andhra Pradesh Volleyball Players Association decided to organise the senior national championship itself there.

Floodlit courts

The Hyderabad Urban Development Authority too chipped in by way of creating makeshift courts — three in all and two of them floodlit. And, the response on the inaugural day was pretty good. With teams in men's and women's section competing in all seriousness, the crowds enjoyed it all despite the nauseating stench from the Hussain Sagar Lake.

The event is costing about Rs. 20 lakhs, says Ravikanth Reddy, former India captain and president of Players Association. In spite being busy with organising the tourney, the players are also competing. Incidentally Ravikanth and Kiran Reddy from the State are the defending champions.

As the sun set on the busy streets of Hyderabad, the crowds at the venue grew in number. For the next three days, Hyderabadis can look forward to some fun and excitement.
