KOCHI: Two municipalities Kalamassery and Thripunithura and 11 neighbouring panchayats of Kochi Corporation will be included in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The panchayats that have been selected for the programme are: Eloor, Varapuzha, Kadamakudy, Cheranalloor, Elamkunnapuzha, Njarakkal, Thrikkakara, Thiruvankulam, Kumbalam, Mulavukad and Maradu. The City Corporation has decided to include these civic bodies in the JNNURM programme for the city as the assistance will be given for the Kochi urban agglomeration, said Mayor Mercy Williams. However, for these civic bodies will have to take formal decisions to take part in the programme, she said. It was earlier made clear that the Kochi Corporation could select the civic bodies for the programme.
Stakeholders' meeting
Meanwhile, Kochi Corporation is continuing the process of interacting with various stakeholders to elicit their views on the development of city. The views expressed by the stakeholders are all documented. These suggestions and proposals will be incorporated in the City Development Plan that is being prepared by the Corporation for receiving assistance from the Mission. The civic authorities have appointed a core group to prepare the plan and a team of Corporation officials is regularly meeting the stakeholders. The authorities plan to complete the Plan before July 31. The civic authorities on Wednesday met trade union leaders and apprised them of the JNNURM programme and also sought their views on development of the city. The representatives of various residents associations also interacted with the civic authorities. A meeting of the MPs and MLAs of Ernakulam district will be held at the Corporation Council Hall on July 8 to discuss the programme.
