Mechanism to book those jumping signals

Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 222 erring motorists were held by the traffic police during the intensive drive launched in the capital from Monday to reduce road accidents during monsoon period.

Of those booked for various traffic offences, 92 motorists were held for overtaking other vehicles through the left side. Action was initiated against others for haphazard parking of vehicles, for not displaying the parking lights and drunken driving.

The traffic police have introduced a permanent mechanism in all major traffic points to book those motorists who jump the signals. According to the Assistant Commissioner, Traffic (South Division), checking has been introduced in these busy traffic points to ensure that the motorists follow the traffic signals and to prevent confusion.

Traffic police personnel have been provided fluorescent jackets, fluorescent gloves, revolving electric batons for regulating the traffic in the capital from 6.30 p.m. Already, hands-free walkie-talkies and breath analysers have been provided to the traffic personnel. The hands-free walkie-talkies would help the policemen on duty to communicate with the traffic control and regulate the traffic at the same time.

The drive had been launched on the basis of the directive issued by Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Arun Kumar Sinha to reduce road accidents in the capital during monsoon period. The drive against erring motorists will continue, the official said.

According to a senior traffic official, the number of accidents in the capital has come down during the last two days following the intense drive undertaken by the traffic wing.
