Thiruvananthapuram: The Government would consider setting up a permanent mechanism to organise Tourism-Onam week celebrations in the State and to make it more attractive to the tourists, Minister for Home and Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said. Presiding over the meeting convened at Durbar Hall of the Secretariat here on Wednesday, the Minister said organising Onam week celebrations in a better way would enable the State to attract tourists in large numbers. Onam week celebrations would also enable the stakeholders of the tourism industry to attract domestic tourists. Mr. Balakrishnan urged all concerned to look into how the celebrations can be organised without much expenditure and to rope in more people. The Minister also stressed the need to organise cultural events that are unique to the State and to find more sponsors. The support and cooperation of the residents associations, traders, cultural organisations and Government departments should be sought for the celebrations. The legislators would head various committees that would be involved in organising the celebrations. Mayor C. Jayan Babu, V. J. Thankappan, Anathalavattom Anandan, V. Sivankutty, Mankode Radhakrishnan, M.A. Vahid, Varkala Kahar, J. Arundathi, V. Surendran Pillai, all legislators, Principal Secretary (Tourism and Culture) E.K. Bharat Bhushan, were among those who attended the meeting.
