HYDERABAD: The second phase of the Krishna water project is half way through with pipelines laid for a distance of 57 km of the 116 km route along the Nagarajunasagar State highway. This is in the four components of the project created along the route. The second phase will bring in another 90 million gallons per day, taking the total volume of the Krishna water supplied in the city to 180 MGD, making the river the major source of drinking water to the twin cities. "We are on target and the second phase will be commissioned by October," V. Jambul Reddy, Director, Projects, HMWSSB, said on Wednesday.
New reservoirs
In anticipation of the arrival of the huge volume, the water board is also in the process of preparing the existing network to take in the additional volume of water. Towards that end, it is building 20 new reservoirs in the twin cities and surrounding municipalities at a cost of Rs. 80 crores in view of the fresh arrivals. The idea is to bring new areas, particularly those in the surrounding municipalities, into the Krishna supply network ambit. The reservoirs will come up at Mahendra Hills, Prakashnagar, Banjara Hills, Chilkalguda, Narayanguda, Santoshnagar, Chanchalguda, Asifnagar, Shiekhpet, Miralam Mandi, Seri Lingampally and other areas.
New pipelines
In addition to the reservoirs, several trunk mains and new pipelines including the crucial 42 km Sahebnagar-Lingampally pipeline are also being laid.
