Computer operator jumps to death

NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old computer operator with a call centre allegedly jumped to his death from the fourth floor of the District Centre at Janakpuri in West Delhi on Wednesday. This is the fifth case of suicide reported from the district centres at Janakpuri in the recent past.

According to the police, the incident took place around 10-30 a.m. when Kartik Swami, a resident of Janakpuri, jumped off his fourth floor office. He had been working with the call centre for the past three years. His father, who works as a cook, told the police that he was suffering from depression for the past two months and had also been undergoing treatment. The doctor had advised him rest.

Inquest proceedings into the matter are on.

Held on charges of cheating

NEW DELHI: The 41-year-old son of a retired Principal of Lady Hardinge Medical College, who was allegedly wanted by the Uttar Pradesh police in connection with a cheating case, has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police. The accused is an alumnus of the Delhi School of Planning and Architecture.

According to the police, Arun Anand had been absconding for the past two years in the case registered in Aligarh. The Uttar Pradesh police declared a reward of Rs.1,500 on his head. For the past several months, he had been living at Sidharth Extension in South Delhi.

Mr. Anand's father has retired as the Dean and Director of National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW). His mother has retired as the Principal of Lady Hardinge Medical College.

Four arrested for committing burglary

NEW DELHI: Four persons have been arrested on charges of committing burglary in the house of a South Extension-based property dealer in the early hours of June 26. The police claim to have recovered stolen property worth about Rs.8 lakhs from their possession.

Criminal injured in encounter

NEW DELHI: A criminal wanted in several cases, was shot at and injured by the Delhi police in an encounter at Bhajanpura in North-East Delhi on Wednesday evening.

Kafi Ullas sustained injuries on his leg and is said to be out of danger.

According to the police, Kafi had on Wednesday morning shot at and seriously injured a person at Loni in Ghaziabad. Acting on a tip-off, the police tried to nab him at Noori Elahi, but Kafi fired at the police. He was arrested after an exchange of fire.

Symposium on disability studies

NEW DELHI: Eminent journalist and former Member of Parliament Kuldip Nayar on Wednesday emphasised the need to give due representation to differently-abled academicians in higher positions in universities and academic institutions.

Speaking at a four-day national symposium on "Disability Studies in India: New Directions for Future" at the School of Arts and Aesthetics in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) here, Mr. Nayar highlighted the need for policy makers to show sincerity with regard to the implementation of the provisions enshrined in the Persons with Disabilities Act.

Earlier, the seminar was inaugurated by Planning Commission member Syeda Hameed. She said the Commission would extend all possible support in promoting teaching and research in the area of disability studies.
