In its decennial year when it is looking forward to a period of rapid development, the Kannur University cannot afford projecting non-academic issues more prominently than what the institution is primarily meant for. Recurrent protests, dharnas and blockades by a section of the staff and students give prominence to issues other than academic. According to Vice-Chancellor P. Chandramohan, the university cannot be lagging behind in initiating steps on a war footing to develop itself into a major centre for higher education. At a press conference here recently, he said that the North Malabar region still remained far behind the other regions of the State as far as access, quality and equity in the education field were concerned. A cardiologist by profession, Dr. Chandramohan said that when he had initiated the efforts to develop the Kottayam Medical College in to a centre of excellence, all people's representatives in Kottayam cutting across political lines backed the idea. Was Dr. Chandramohan suggesting that the unity of purpose among the people's representatives was in short supply as far as development of the university is concerned?
