NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) termed the developments in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences as "unfortunate" and said it does not bode well for the autonomy and integrity of the premier institute for medical services in the country. Expressing concern over the matter, the party Polit Bureau said in a statement that the affairs in the institution have reached a stage where the governing board has adopted a resolution for the removal of the Director. The Polit Bureau urges the government to intervene to amicably settle the issue. It said in the recent period, the AIIMS had become the centre for the anti-reservation movement; the authorities running the institute did not keep in mind the fact that the reservation for scheduled castes, tribes and OBCs was a constitutional provision and that a Central Government institution in particular has to conform to the Constitution. The strike by doctors in AIIMS and other hospitals on the issue has put thousands of patients to hardship. Mindful of the difficulties faced by the people, the doctors should call off the strike and register their protest by other means, the Polit Bureau said and urged the government to intervene to amicably settle the issue.
Decision unfortunate
The All India Forward Bloc said the decision to remove Dr. Venugopal was "very unfortunate and against all democratic traditions." The party national secretary, G. Devarajan, said the way the Health Ministry was interfering in the day-to-day affairs of an autonomous institutions was "highly condemnable."
