BANGALORE: Juki Corporation of Japan, which is into industrial and household sewing machines and SMT (surface mounted technology), will be reinforcing its sales and technical outfits in India, considering the growth potential that exists here. Announcing this on the eve of the first ever Juki expo 2006 to be held in India in Bangalore from July 7 to 9, the Chairman and CEO of Juki, Takeo Yamaoka, said from a modest beginning of sales of household sewing machines, Juki now had seven offices across the country, though the products were all being imported from Juki plants either from Japan or China. The company is holding similar roadshows in Chennai (August 18 to 20), Delhi (September 8 to 10) and Mumbai (November 10 to 12). The Managing Director of Juki Machinery (India), Noriaki Saito, said at the end of March 2006, sales of Juki industrial sewing machines in India were $30 million and the growth had been 60 per cent over the previous year. The company was targeting $40 million this year. With regard to SMT, the country head of SMT, Juki, Chandramohan, said though the SMT base in India was still in the nascent stage, there existed enormous potential with the growth of PC vendors, mobile handset manufacturers and set-top box manufacturers. Juki had started its operations in May this year in India and it would continue to source its products from Japan or China.
