NEW DELHI: The India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) has drawn up ambitious plans to boost the occupancy rate in its hotels, improve service and stock up its duty free shops at international airports. After weathering the disinvestment that took away some of its hotels, the ITDC was now gearing up to meet the challenge of 2010 Commonwealth games to be held here by adding to its capacity of hotel rooms. The corporation would add nearly 200 rooms in its flagship Hotel Ashok, and two other hotels Qutab and Janpath in New Delhi, Vinod Sharma, General Manager of Hotel Ashok, told reporters. He said all rooms in the hotel were being improved by adding new facilities like electronic safes and new furnishings. More facilities like health check-ups for its guests were also being provided at competitive prices. "A complete cardio-vascular and pathological check up for our guests in a leading private hospital is being offered at Rs. 3,000 ,'' he said. Other services like prompt room service, new cuisine and "healthy foods'' have been launched. If the results of the first quarter of 2006-07 are any indication, the ITDC looks set to leave its loss-making years behind. For, the hotels division registered a hike in its profit as against a loss of Rs. 126.76 lakh in the same period last year. The division earned a profit of Rs. 249.96 lakh, making a net profit of Rs. 3.77 crore in the first quarter of 2006-07. Similarly, the duty free division recorded a net rise of 139 per cent as against last year's loss of Rs. 268.87 lakh. It showed a net profit of Rs. 3.75 crore in the first quarter of the current fiscal. The total rise in ITDC's profits in the first quarter was Rs. 8.04 crore, offsetting a loss of Rs. 4.38 crore, but also achieving a profit of Rs. 3.66 crore.
