New terminal building for Tiruchi airport

S. Ganesan

Work to be completed by September 2007

TIRUCHI: The work on the construction of a new state-of-the-art terminal building for the Tiruchi airport will begin within a month.

Preliminary site preparation works have already begun and the integrated terminal building, with a capacity to handle about 500 passengers, will be ready by September 2007, said the Regional Executive Director of the Airports Authority of India, Southern Region, K. Ramalingam, addressing presspersons here on Thursday.

Mr. Ramalingam was here to review the ongoing runway expansion works and to inspect the site of the new terminal building.

The terminal building and other allied facilities, including two aerobridges, escalators and a city-side canopy, have been sanctioned at a total cost of Rs.75 crore. The terminal building alone would cost about Rs.42 crore. The associated works would be completed six months after the terminal building was constructed.

Apron expansion work

Tenders have also been called for the apron expansion work, planned at an investment of Rs.16.63 crore and is likely to be completed by March, 2007. The expanded apron would provide parking space for aircraft such as the Airbus 310 and the Boeing 737. He said the runway expansion work had been completed and expanded runway would become operational after the calibration of the relocated Instrument Landing System (ILS). A trial calibration conducted last week had identified a few obstructions. Fresh calibration would be done, once the corrective measures were taken.

He said the expanded runway would become fully operational within the next two months after obtaining clearances from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. A modern, category VI Fire Station had also been established in the airport and the existing terminal expanded to increase its passenger handling capacity to 200.
