CHENNAI: A team of doctors and medical aid workers from Pakistan, Bangladesh and northern India visited the 24-hour maternity clinic run by the Chennai Corporation on Wednesday to study the practices there. The team, which includes doctors from Gujarat and Rajasthan, was keen to study the reasons for the low maternal mortality rate in Tamil Nadu. According to statistics provided by the Corporation, maternal mortality in the state is one per lakh. The figure is ten times lower than some of the other states in the country. The Corporation has been running two 24-hour maternity centres at Saidapet and at Perumalpet near Purasawalkam for more than two years. The civic agency has introduced several initiatives to ensure safe childbirth, including the "birth-companion" scheme that allows pregnant women to have a companion to aid them through childbirth. They also showed interest in the manner in which caesarean operations were being carried out, especially the practices to reduce maternal mortality.
