Coimbatore: The district administration is gearing up for the likely impact of the South West Monsoon on the region now itself. Addressing a disaster management meeting here on Wednesday, the District Collector, Neeraj Mittal, announced that a special telephone (no 2306051) functioning at the Collectorate in connection with flood control could be called up to inform regarding any natural calamity. There could be floods and landslips, he warned. He wanted the Public Works Department to strengthen the bunds of the tanks. Besides, low-lying areas should be identified. All precautionary measures should be initiated to prevent the adverse effects due to floods. For the flood relief measures, the officials had been advised to keep ready bulldozers, poclains, casuarina sticks and sandbags. In addition, he advised the PWD to keep life saving drugs ready in adequate measure, both in the primary health centres and hospitals. Besides, preventive medicine should be made available to combat cholera attack. He directed the Highways officials to initiate immediate steps to clear the roads where traffic might be hit due to falling of trees following gusty winds. He requested the personnel of the Highways, Fire and Rescue Services and Electricity Department to act in unison in this regard. The Civil Supplies authorities were also instructed to keep adequate quantity of rice ready in the fair price shops. The PWD officials were asked to inform the public through the mass media regarding the rainfall and also the water level in the reservoirs
