RELIGIOUS FERVOUR: Thousands of devotees witnessing `Sandanakoodu' procession at the dargah of Saint Hazrath Syed Shahul Hameed Quadir Wali in Nagore on Friday.
NAGAPATTINAM: Thousands of devotees on Friday witnessed the main event of the anointment of sandal paste at the famous five-century-old dargah of Saint Hazrath Syed Shahul Hameed Quadir Wali at Nagore after the `Sandanakoodu' procession that started from Nagapattinam reached Nagore in the early hours of Friday. The fortnight-long 449th year Kandoori festival began with the hoisting of the holy flag at the famous Nagore dargah near here on June 27. The festival attracts thousands of devotees from various parts of the country and abroad. `Fatiha' would be performed on July 10, the concluding day of festival.
Highlight
The highlight of the festival is participation of Hindus in large numbers. The Hindus along with Muslims took bath in the `peer kulam' (holy pond) in the dargah premises on Friday in the belief that the water in the tank has several curative powers. The dargah in Nagore has a golden dome flanked by five minarets. The dargah itself stands as a symbol of communal harmony as it is located in a land donated by Achuthappa Naicken, the Hindu king of Thanjavur in 16th century to Saint Shahul Hameed. The death anniversary of the saint is celebrated as `Kandoori' festival every year.
