NAMAKKAL: Aiming to give a fresh impetus to tourism activities in Kolli Hills, the district administration has begun creating more infrastructure there. While visiting a number of villages in the Kolli Hills Union on Wednesday, Collector G. Sundaramurthi said the Kolli Hills was having enormous tourism potential. In addition to the creation of new facilities, the existing facilities would be revamped.
Handrails
He said the district administration would improve the steps and install handrail along the steps leading to the Akasha Ganga waterfall at a cost of Rs. 11.6 lakh. It would also create a new park in front of the youth hostel in the Kolli Hills at a cost of about Rs. 7 lakh. The park would have all necessary amenities for the tourists. He instructed the officials to complete the creation of park by July 25. The Seekuparai viewpoint would be developed and new amenities would be created near it at a cost of about Rs. 2.5 lakh facilitating the tourists to enjoy the scenic beauty of the hills. The district administration was planning to repair the damaged approach road for the viewpoint. These works would be completed as quickly as possible, the Collector said. Addressing a press conference on Friday, Mr. Sundaramurthi said the district administration had taken steps to get approval from the Union Ministry of Forests to complete the laying of an alternative road from Mullukurichi to the Kolli Hills. "Once the roadwork is completed, tourists will be able to reach Kolli Hills easily," he said.
Opportunity for tribals
"The basic objective of all these tourism development works is to provide opportunities for the tribal people living in the Kolli hills to enhance their living standard. With a lot of tourists visiting the hills, the tribal people will get chances to earn more. Their socio-economic condition will improve. Members of self-help groups in the area can establish shops to augment their income," he said. The Collector, while visiting the villages, received about 520 petitions from the people. He assured the people that necessary action would be taken against the petitions and a proper reply would be given to the petitioners. He distributed free house sites to 32 beneficiaries and community certificates to 12 persons.
