Environmentalists and students of Kozhikode and Wayanad districts have chalked out a plan for the conservation and beautification of Wayanad Ghat Road. The Ghat Road, which is the primary link between Kozhikode and Wayanad, is well-known for its picturesque sights on the way as it winds up to an altitude of 2,700 feet above sea level, to reach the abode of spices. Passing through the hairpin bends, and the views offered are a prized experience for any traveller on the road. The 12-km high range road on the fringes of the Western Ghats needed to be conserved and beautified, the environmentalists aver. Unfortunately, the road has been neglected: wastes, especially plastic, are being dumped on either side of the road, posing environmental degradation. The situation would have a detrimental impact on the forests. Forest Minister Benoy Viswom will inaugurate the first phase of the five-year conservation drive at a programme to be held at Lakkidi, near Kozhikode, on July 9.
