Students of Vidyodaya School, Thevakkal, were treated to an `edutainment' session by an author of books for children. In his 505th tryst with students, the author, Pullarkat Babu, exhorted them to say a firm `No' to drugs. He regaled them with lucid poems of practical enlightenment. It is over a decade since he brought in his approach of `Fullness of knowledge', leaving indelible imprints in the minds of the young. For this, he used poetry and philosophy. "Such poetic sojourns catalyse positive response in both students and teachers," said Krishnakumari Nair M, Principal of Vidyodaya. Mr. Babu has authored several books, including Mattanga Thoni (The Pumpkin Boat), Paal Payasam, Nakshatra Pookkal, Paattupaadam Kuttikale, Naadodikatha and Nallakatha. Mattanga Thoni and Amritha Kairali have been prescribed as texts by the Kerala and Tamil Nadu governments. Mr. Babu took to writing after retiring as Deputy Director in the Fisheries Department. He regularly takes classes on environmental awareness. His Thullalpattu about AIDS has been widely discussed.
Tourism club inaugurated
Tourism is not merely a job provider. It enhances interaction between cultures, K Babu, MLA, said. He was speaking after inaugurating the tourism club at the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, North Edapally. He said many people had misconceptions about tourism. The new generation should be made aware of the reality and potential of tourism. T.N. Jayasankar, tourism lecturer at KITTS, delivered the keynote address. T.M. Jameela, Principal, presided over the function.
`Encourage reading habit'
Students should be taught the value of money. They should learn to use it judiciously, said the speakers at a merit evening organised by the Sahodaya Schools Complex in Kochi. The speakers noted that in modern schooling, the library had been marginalised. "This is not a good symptom. Students should be encouraged to read books and newspapers." They said success depends on the support systems in place. "A student gets support from the school, teachers and parents. The chemistry of these helps a student to become successful. Students should be taught ethics and values at the school level. The Sahodaya Complex is a forum of CBSE school Principals.
