VILLUPURAM: Three students and a passerby died when they came under a pile of sugarcane at Perumbakkam near here on Friday. Police sources said the students, M. Bharathi Raja (12), V. Indumathi (10) and I. Prabhu (10), going back to school after lunch hour, and a resident of the area G. Sakthivel (20), came under the load that was being carried in a tractor trailer. The rope binding the load snapped and heaps of sugarcane came down on the four. The several tonnes of sugarcane was being taken to a sugar mill at Kancheerpuram. On information District Collector, Ashish Chatterji, DIG of Police Rajiv Kumar and SP K. Periaiah reached the spot. When the stalks of sugarcane were removed, the victims were found lying unconscious. Upon reaching the government hospital, all four were declared dead. The police have registered a case.
