Guwahati : Security for top Reserve Bank of India officials has been strengthened in the wake of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) serving an extortion notice to the RBI Regional Director here demanding Rs. 15 lakh. Special Branch Inspector-General of Police Khagen Sharma told The Hindu that special security had been provided for the Regional Director Amarendra Sahu. Police said the extortion note bearing the signature of the self-styled commander of ULFA's 709 battalion, Hira Sarania, was handed over to security guards of the RBI Colony here on Tuesday. The note was accompanied by another letter signed in the name of Vikram Singh, a self-styled platoon commander, who warned of serious consequences if the demand was not met. Vikram Singh also cautioned the official to maintain confidentiality to "ensure safety of you and your family." The People's Committee of Peace Initiative (PCPI), a pressure group comprising 21 organisations, has warned of a strong people's movement if the State Government did not release five jailed ULFA leaders and stopped Army operations by July 30 to facilitate direct talk with the militant outfit. The PCPI also decided to stage a dharna before the Assembly on the second day of the budget session on July 11 to press for the release of ULFA leaders and halt to the Army operations.
