NEW DELHI: Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia on Friday said that disinvestment of the Centre's equity in public sector undertakings (PSUs) was not the core of economic reforms. In an apparent bid to allay misgivings over the Centre's decision to hold all disinvestment proposals in abeyance till further review, Dr. Ahluwalia said: "I have never felt that disinvestment is the core of reforms. The reform agenda is very, very wide ranging." "Quite frankly, I do not think that [the] PM's statement [putting all disinvestment decisions on hold] would prevent moving on a wide range of things which are absolutely crucial," he said, while interacting with newspersons here. The Approach Paper to the Eleventh Plan, Dr. Ahluwalia pointed out, dealt with a host of reform measures that were required to be taken in agriculture such as larger public investment, new organisational methods, change in laws and a wider role for the market. "None of these has anything to do with disinvestment," he said.
