Kozhikode: The Kozhikode Corporation accorded a warm reception to Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty at the Council Hall here on Friday. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister called on municipal corporations to envisage a strategy for safe disposal of garbage in their jurisdictions. "Solid waste management has become a major concern for municipalities and corporations. Villages are swiftly turning into towns and cities into metropolises. Obviously, the safe disposal of garbage is a problem for the civic bodies. Garbage collected on a single day should be treated before the next day," Mr. Mohammed Kutty said. Touching on the vexing Njeliyanparamba issue in Kozhikode, he also suggested the need for launching awareness programmes and seeking the cooperation of the affected parties. Kozhikode Mayor M. Bhaskaran presented a memento to the Minister. He also submitted a memorandum highlighting various needs of the corporation including financial assistance for implementing the solid waste management programme, revising building rules, filling vacancies, amending rules for restructuring the standing committees of the corporation, granting permission to continue the RCH project and taking immediate steps to solve the drinking water problem in the city. Deputy Mayor P.T. Abdul Latheef, Opposition leader Mamu Koya Haji, and Corporation Secretary M.A. Sreedharan Nair were among those who spoke.
