NLC employees thank Chief Minister

CHENNAI: Representatives of employees of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation met Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party office and thanked him for stopping the sale of 10 per cent Government stake in the Corporation. Earlier, Mr. Karunanidhi praised the workers and the Left parties and said the "toil" that he referred to was that of the workers and the "truth" referred to the stand taken by the Left parties on the issue. He was happy that the issue was resolved and workers' rights had been protected. Some, who tried to play politics on the issue were left high and dry, he said and added that these people were giving contradictory statements. — Special Correspondent

Ramadoss' plea to Centre

CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss on Friday urged the Centre to make a policy that shares of profit-making public sector undertakings would not be sold to the private sector. Praising the Prime Minister for the announcement on the disinvestment issue of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Dr. Ramadoss said this would enthuse workers of the Corporation. — Special Correspondent

Curbs on airlines for flights over Bay

CHENNAI: To facilitate the proposed launch of the Geo-Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, the Airports Authority of India has imposed restrictions over the Bay of Bengal air space. Consequently, a notice to airmen has been issued to airlines to reschedule their services on July 9 and 10. Flights overflying the Bay of Bengal to Singapore and Port Blair have been rescheduled between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on both the days. Accordingly, those booked to travel to Singapore and Port Blair have been requested to check the change in flight timings. — Special Correspondent

Halt for trains at Melmaruvathur

CHENNAI: Following demands from rail users, passenger associations, pilgrims and elected representatives, Southern Railway has announced stoppage for the following trains at Melmaruvathur for two minutes from July 25 to 29 in connection with `Adipooram Festival.'

Income Tax raids

CHENNAI: Undisclosed assets worth Rs. 1.8 crore and incriminating documents relating to the manipulation of accounts were seized by Income Tax (Investigation) Department officers, following a raid conducted on the residential and business premises of a group dealing in the distribution of two and four wheelers on Tuesday. According to an official release, the group has operations in Chennai, Vellore, Tiruchi, Madurai, Theni, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin.

In all, 60 premises including nine residential premises were searched. The search was organised by the Additional Director of Income Tax (Investigation), Madurai, under the direction of the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation) and the Director of Income Tax (Investigation), Chennai. — Special Correspondent

136 held for bid to squat on rail track

TIRUNELVELI: A total of 136 persons led by Shencottai municipality chairperson Raja Saraswathi courted arrest when they tried to squat on the rail track at Shencottai on Friday.

Demanding the immediate conversion of metre gauge line into broad gauge and operation of Pothigai Express from Shencottai to Chennai everyday, the protestors tried to enter the Shencottai railway station to stage the protest. However, they were stopped and arrested. They were released in the evening.

Theft in hostel

Tuticorin: The police are on the look out for some unidentified persons who had stolen jewels and cash from a government girls hostel at Muniyasamypuram near here on Thursday. According to police, the thieves scaled the compound wall and took away one pair of ear stud, four anklets, 11 watches and a sum of Rs. 500 kept inside the trunk of a student.

The police have registered a case based on a complaint lodged by Kalaiselvi (26), warden of the hostel.

Agitation over poor quality of noon meals

Nagercoil: Uneasy calm prevailed at Keelamaravan Kudiyuruppu near here, as the local residents went to Government Middle School and asked their children not to eat noon-meals, as the quality of meals provided by the school authorities was poor. On hearing the agitation, officials rushed to the school and pacified the parents.

New SP takes charge

Nagercoil: Kannan assumed office as the new Superintendent of Police on Friday. Previously, he served as ASP in Thanjavur and Kovilpatti. Later he said his first priority was to eliminate anti-social elements and ensure a good rapport between public and the police.

Mahakumbhabishekam

Nagercoil: Mahakumbhabishekam of Sri Bhagavathy Amman temple at Padmanabhapuram, the erstwhile capital of Travancore State, will be held after 300 years on July 8.

This temple is situated within the premises of palace.

Local residents formed Sri Alamparai Bhagavathy Amman Renovation Committee and restored its glory.

Temple to be renovated

Nagercoil: The Prince of erstwhile Travancore State, Uthradam Thirunal Marthanda Varma inaugurated renovation of Thiruvattar Adikesava Perumal temple.

The 1,500-year-old Vaishnavite temple was being renovated at a total estimate of Rs. 3 crore including Rs.1.5 crore from Archaeological Survey of India, Rs. 25 lakh from the State Government. The rest would be collected from others, said the renovation committee president Sreedhar.

Water level

MADURAI: The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 121.80 feet with an inflow of 1819 cusecs and a discharge of 1143 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 44.36 feet with an inflow of 593 cusecs and a discharge of 850 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 3990 mcft.

Tekkadi recorded 4 mm of rainfall followed by Periyar dam 3 and Gudalur 1 mm.

Special buses to Tiruvannamalai

Tiruchi The Kumbakonam division of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation will operate 50 special buses from nine centres to Tiruvannamalai with reservation facility for an up-and-down journey from the early hours of July 10, on the occasion of `Girivalam' at Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple in Tiruvannamalai.

The buses would be operated at Tiruchi, Karur, Musiri, Thuraiyur, Manapparai, Thuvarankurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Jayamkondam.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 107.65 feet on Friday. The inflow was 29,870 cusecs and the outflow 18,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Arrested

ERODE: Seventeen volunteers of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) led by Subramaniam, the district Secretary, were arrested on Friday when they attempted to conduct `rail roko' at the Erode railway station opposing the hike in the prices of petrol and diesel. They were released in the evening. - Staff Reporter

Fund sanctioned

ERODE: To develop jatropha cultivation in the district, the Government has sanctioned Rs. 54 lakh this year. With this amount, 18 lakh jetropha saplings will be planted in Erode and Sathyamangalam forest areas, said Collector D. Karthikeyan at the District Parliamentary Committee meeting here on Friday.

The meeting discussed group houses, tiled group houses, MLA, MP Constituency Development fund and other Central Government sponsored schemes.

The MLAs, K.V. Ramanathan, Vidiyal S. Sekar and C. Ponnudurai and the Project Officer, DRDA, R. Rajashree, and others participated. - Staff Reporter

Ganja seized

SALEM: The Narcotics Intelligence Bureau personnel have arrested three persons and seized 4 kg of ganja from them on Wednesday night. The arrested were Arumugam (32), Manickavasagam and Mani, all residents of Tiruchengode. - Staff Reporter

Uniforms distributed

SALEM: The Rotary Club of Salem South had donated uniforms and textbooks worth Rs. 15,000 to 45 children of the Lotus orphanage at a function held here recently. A. James, who was installed as the new president of the club, had handed over the uniforms and textbooks.
