Congress in a fix in Urupam mandal

Correspondent

VIZIANAGARAM : The Congress is caught in a strange situation in Urupam mandal. The party has no candidate for the reserved mandal parishad president (MPP) post even though it had won majority of MPTCs in the mandal. The Congress won seven MPTCs, the TDP 4, CPI(M) one and independent one out of 13 MPTCs. The MPP post is reserved for BC (general). But no Congress candidate belonging to that category won the elections from any one of the reserved MPTCs. All those who won are from ST category.

Though the TDP has the candidates it does not have the required number to claim the post. The Congress rebel, Basavaraju Chandra Rao, who won from Kurupam-3, is the lone BC (general) candidate, and the Congress is banking on him.

Parallel troubles

The TDP is facing a similar situation in Mentada mandal where they won seven MPTCs out of 14, the Congress six and a Congress rebel K. Kalavathi won as an independent from Badavalasa MPTC. The MPP post is reserved for SC (general). The TDP is trying to woo the independent.
