Report awaited in assault case: Minister

BANGALORE: The Government will not hesitate to order an investigation, if required, by the Corps of Detectives into the alleged assault on some students at the Jnanabharati campus of Bangalore University, Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy told the Legislative Council on Friday.

Replying to Vimala Gowda (BJP), he said the university had constituted a committee to look into the details. The committee was yet to submit its report.

He would instruct the university to expedite the inquiry and submit the report at the earliest, he added.

The Jnanabharati police had registered a case and investigation was on, he added. — Staff Reporter

Council mourns seer, S. Ramesh

BANGALORE: The Legislative Council on Friday mourned the death of Sri Beerendra Keshava Tarakanandapuri Swamiji of Kaginele Kanakaguru Peeta on Thursday.

The House also mourned the death of the former Minister S. Ramesh, who died on Friday morning. He was a Minister in the Bangarappa government. — Staff Reporter

BCA results to be announced on Monday

Bangalore: The results of the 5th and 6th semester BCA examination held in May 2006 will be announced at 3 p.m. on July 10 in the respective colleges.

Principals of the colleges concerned can collect the result sheets and marks cards from the office of the Registrar (Evaluation), Bangalore University, at 11 a.m. on July 10, according to an official press release.

SSLC supplementary exam results today

Bangalore: BSNL will provide the SSLC supplementary examination results for 2005-2006 through integrated voice response system (IVRS) for landline and mobile customers on July 8 by 4 p.m. Callers from Bangalore can get the results by dialling 1255225, and callers from outside Bangalore can dial 9580 1255225 or 080 1255225.

Alamatti water-level touches 516.87 m

BIJAPUR: Though there was a reduction in inflow, the water-level in the Alamatti Dam on Friday rose to 516.87 metres as against the full reservoir level of 519.6 metres.

The discharge from the dam, which was raised to 2 lakh cusecs on Thursday, was brought down to 1.68 lakh cusecs.

The inflow, which was 1.84 lakh cusecs on Thursday, came down to 1.64 lakh cusecs on Friday.

According to the executive engineer of the Alamatti Dam Division, Gopalkrishna Gupta, there will be a slight increase in the inflow in the next 24 hours. In that case, the discharge would be increased proportionately, he added. — Staff Correspondent

Environmental workshop for teachers

Bangalore: Sanctuary Magazine, in association with Complan, has decided to organise a workshop for teachers, "Kids for Tigers," to throw light on ecological and environmental issues. The workshop has been organised to ensure that the next generation is geared up to help save the remaining natural resources.

The teachers will be made to take a pledge (Apna farz nibhayenge, Tiger ko bachayenge) to save the tiger.

The theme of this year's workshop is "Tiger's destiny: a now or never movement to save the species."

Around 45 schools from Bangalore have registered to participate in the workshop, which will be held on Saturday at the Horticultural Information Centre, Lalbagh. For more information, visit the website www.kidsfortigers.org.

Resolution on classical status for Kannada

HAMPI: Siddalingaiah, Chairman of the Kannada Development Authority, has underlined the need for a resolution to be adopted by the two Houses of the legislature to get classical status for Kannada.

Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, he said the demand seeking classical status for Kannada was genuine and adopting a resolution by the two Houses of the legislature would be like extending moral support to it. He said he would take up the matter at the government level and urge it to adopt a resolution. Dr. Siddalingaiah said the authority was keen on working closely with Kannada University in the propagation of Kannada. He said the authority would involve itself in the efforts of the university to bring out a book on "balake Kannada kosha". — Staff Correspondent

Health check-up

GULBARGA: Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society president Basavaraj Bhimalli on Friday declared that the Basaveshwar General and Teaching Hospital had decided to adopt two more villages along with Sanjeev Nagar Slum locality in Gulbarga city and Nandur K village in Gulbarga taluk for providing free health care services and facilities to the poor and under privileged sections of society. Inaugurating a free health check-up camp at Sanjeev Nagar Slum, Mr. Bhimalli said the hospital in cooperation with World Vision India would adopt two more villages. As many as 240 patients, including 30 pregnant women, attended the camp. Medical Superintendent of the hospital Shivaraj Alashetty welcomed the gathering. Medical Director of the hospital P.S. Shankar and Dean of MR Medical College Mallikarjun Bhandari spoke. — Special Correspondent

Killed in accident

BIJAPUR: P.Y. Mailikar, 56, Assistant Sub-Inspector at the Gol Gumbaz Police Station, was killed in a road mishap when he was on night patrolling on Thursday. A jeep hit his two-wheeler at Bagalkot Cross around 11 p.m., and he died on the way to hospital. The driver of the jeep is yet to be traced.
