Sensitising policemen to evils of alcohol

LAW &ORDER The SP has embarked on a mission to educate policemen on how alcohol can ruin their lives, writes R. Sundaram

IN AN effort to make the police force lead a disciplined life, the Superintendent of Police (SP), Sonal V. Misra, has decided to conduct the police sub-divisional level meeting. In every monthly meeting or visit to stations, she likes to advise the policemen on how alcohol could ruin their lives.

There are seven police sub-divisions in the district, Erode, Bhavani, Gobichettipalayam, Sathyamangalam, Perundurai, Kangeyam and Dharapuram. She visits each sub-division once in a week. She says about 10 per cent of the constabulary is addicted to alcohol or gambling because of which their families suffer.

The Superintendent of Police also collects grievances of the policemen during the visits. She also gets the applications for transfers from them. About 90 per cent of the policemen have got posted in the stations they preferred. She also wants them to spend at least six to eight hours with their family.

She says she is concentrating on the welfare of the policemen, but if they indulge in any bad practice, she will not hesitate to punish them.

Instead of forcing her to take action against them, the policemen can lead a disciplined life, she says.
