Centre accepts site for nuclear plant

Special Correspondent

Kumharia village in Fatehabad district was earmarked by the Haryana Govt.

NEW DELHI: The Union Government has accepted the site earmarked by the Haryana Government for setting up a nuclear power project, according to a top official of the State Government.

"The Government of India has informed us that Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. has accepted the location at Kumharia village in Fatehabad district," said R.N. Parasher, Principal Secretary (Power), Haryana at an interaction organised by the PHD Chamber here on Friday.

Although no indication has been given by the Centre as to when the project is to be started, Mr Parasher said: ""They have said Haryana will get a nuclear plant in future," while noting that the Haryana Government would push for including the proposal in the list of priority projects, especially as the State lacked other sources of fuel such as coal, wind or gas. In fact, owing to the non-availability of gas, the gas-based projects planned earlier are yet to take off.

The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, Mr Parasher recalled, had earlier approved, in principle, the Haryana Government's demand for setting up a nuclear power plant to tide over the shortage of electricity in the State.

On the State's plans for the power sector, Mr Parasher said that the Govt. was also planning to increase its generating capacity by about 4,000 MW within the next four years, apart from refurbishing (T&D) network.

For the Eleventh Plan, the State Government, he said, proposed to invest Rs 16,000 crores in the sector. The plan, among other things, was to commission a 600 MW unit at Yamunanagar and another 1,000 MW unit at Hissar, he said.
