Six arrested in group housing scandal

Staff Reporter

Remanded to CBI custody

NEW DELHI: Six persons, including a former assistant registrar, have been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation for allegedly trying to revive a defunct Cooperative Group Housing Society (CGHS) through fraudulent means.

According to the CBI, former assistant registrar, Ramesh Chandra, had not only used fraudulent methods to revive Chanakya CGHS but had also pressurised his subordinates in obtaining favourable reports which helped in the revival of the Society.

The CBI said the Society did not even fall within the jurisdiction of the accused who had allegedly received huge sums of money as bribe.

The CBI also arrested the builder, Ramesh Bajaj, who had paid Rs. 40 lakhs for acquiring the Chanakya CGHS. He had bought it from a middleman with the help of two other mediators. An architect, Harinderpal Singh Thapar, had allegedly helped prepare false membership records to show that the Chanakya CGHS was functioning. The architect was also instrumental in fraudulently reviving another Society. Former senior auditor, P.K. Tharwani, was also allegedly involved in the fraud.

Former dealing assistant, Rakesh Kumar, and Lower Division Clerk, R.D. Chauhan, had prepared false inspection and spot verification reports and also submitted false verification reports on documents pertaining to the Society.

They too received huge amounts as bribe for helping in the revival of the Society.

All the six accused were produced in the Special CBI court which remanded them to one-day CBI custody.
