THRISSUR: Actor Mammootty said on Thursday that the Malayalam film industry was emerging out of a crisis. Addressing a press conference along with director Kamal, Mammootty said television serials had lost their sheen. More people are going to the theatres now. This, in turn, had encouraged producers to take up new projects. He, however, dismissed the allegation that the high remuneration of superstars was the root cause of the crisis gripping Malayalam film industry. "Superstars had not reduced their rates; yet, more films are becoming successful." He said more attention was being paid to selection of stories for films and in its presentation. Also, prominent stars do not bargain on rates if they find the film worthy of support, Mammootty said. The actor said there have been efforts now to reduce the overall cost of production of films, and luckily low budget films too were making a mark in theatres across the State.,. Kamal said his new film Karutha Pakshikal is about the ordeals of a poor Tamil migrant casual labourer in Kerala. Mammootty plays the role of the Tamil labourer in the film, he said. He said this low budget film made under the banner of G.V. Productions will reach the theatres by September.
