PALAKKAD: There is an alarming increase in the illegal felling of sandalwood trees from both forest and private land in different parts of the Attappady hills. In the last two days, eight trees were felled at Nellippathy and Palliyara near Agali. Earlier, hundreds of sandalwood trees from the Kuthanadi and Puliyappathy areas of Shoalyur forest range were felled. In these areas, there is natural growth of sandal trees in forest and private areas.Once, Attappady had good sandal tree growth like Marayur but they were cut decades back. Now it was the secondary growth that was being felled, local people said.
