PALAKKAD: Minister for Electricity A.K. Balan has said that the Government will give priority for non-convention energy and mini-hydro schemes. Inaugurating a 33 KV sub-station at Alathur here on Thursday, the Minister said that in the next five years the number of electricity consumers in the State would cross one crore, for which additional 1,500 MW was required. As against the present demand of 4,000 MW, the State was producing only 2,600 MW. He said that environmentalists were opposing the 125 MW hydel project at Athirappally. The Minister said that the Government would extend all help to the district panchayat to take up the much-delayed 3.5 MW Meenvallam mini-hydel project.
