Guntur
Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: The nomination of ZP Chairperson candidate was a smooth affair in Guntur district, but it was keen contest for the Mandal Parishad Presidentship at many places. The leaders of Congress and TDP have been running camps at several places in the district and outside to safeguard their interests. The Telugu Desam Party is likely to get its nominee elected in seven mandals, while the remaining have gone decisively in favour of the Congress. At Kakumanu and Pedanandipadu the TDP has only one seat more than Congress, so has put all its MPTCs in Hyderabad. At Muppalla, while Congress and TDP have equal number of seats, the Congress does not have an ST (general) elected candidate to occupy the chair, so the TDP candidate gets the chance. The position in Pedakakani is also similar with both parties winning six seats each and an independent has won one seat and has become crucial now. The Pedakakani ZPTC has, however, gone to the TDP.
TDP's chances
The other places where TDP can occupy the MPP's chair are Kolluru, Karlapalem, and Amruthaluru. The MPP post in Tenali is reserved for a candidate from the Backward Class community. All the party leaders felt that Congress' candidate from the party's stronghold Nandivelugu-1, Tadiboyina Venkata Narasiah stood a good chance of getting the post. However, his defeat in the hands of the Telugu Desam Party's (TDP) candidate, Sheik Basha with a difference of just 10 votes sealed his fate. The leaders also propped up the candidate from Jaggadiguntapalem MPTC, as the prospective MPP. However, her defeat in the hands of Doddaka Adinarayana of the TDP was a blow to the Congress' aspirations. With the defeat of the two main candidates, all the other successful MPTCs from the BC community were queuing up to try for the post. The candidates in the race include Kolakalur-III MPTC Kotta Isaac Sam and MPTC from Kancherapalem and Somasundarapalem Kesana Koteshwara Rao. The Congress had won 11 MPTCs while the TDP had won nine.
At Duggirala
The TDP was trying hard to lure the elected MPTCs from the Congress as both the parties have almost a similar score. From among the 17 MPTCs in the mandal, the Congress had won nine MPTCs while the TDP won eight. The MPP has been reserved for a BC woman. Among the candidates in the race include Morampudi MPTC Mallarapu Malleshwari, who is also the sarpanch of Duggirala village. She is believed to have the support of all the mandal-level leaders.
