KARIMNAGAR: There was steep decline of voting per cent for the Congress in the local bodies elections when compared to the last Assembly elections in the district. Even though, the State Government had launched ambitious schemes like - `jala yagnam' , free power to farmers, waiver of power dues to farmers, implementation of Indira Prabha , Indiramma programmes , increase in pension amount and other welfare schemes during the last two years - it miserably failed in the local bodies elections. Compared to the last Assembly elections, the Congress had lost about 15 per cent of its votes and secured only 22 ZPTCs when compared to 25 ZPTCs by the TDP - which emerged as the single largest party in the Zilla Parishad. In the 2004 elections, the Congress polled 58 per cent votes, but in the local bodies elections it had come down to 43 per cent despite alliance with the TRS and CPI. While, the TDP, which polled 40 per cent votes in 2004, had polled 41.11 per cent in local bodies elections without any alliance in the elections in the district. During the Assembly elections, the Congress along with its allies has secured a total of 8,68,149 votes, while the TDP and its ally - BJP - secured 6,08,870 votes. While in the ZP elections, the Congress and its allies polled 6,30,782 votes - the TDP alone secured 6,03,122 votes. Even in the municipal elections, the TDP performed very well by steadily increasing its vote bank. Out of four municipalities and Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, the Congress polled 63,520 votes and the TDP secured 60,876 votes. In the municipal polls, the TDP secured 1.22 per cent less votes than the Congress party. On the other hand, in spite of launching the ambitious Indiramma villages programme for the all-round development of villages, the party failed to cash in the local bodies elections.
