NAGAPATTINAM : A four-lane elevated highway will be laid for a stretch of 9.2 km from War Memorial in Chennai to Maduravoyal at a cost of Rs.800 crore, said T.R. Baalu, Union Minister for Shipping, Surface Transport and National Highways, at Thirukkuvalai on Thursday. Addressing the valedictory function of the five-day Info-Expo public information campaign under the Right to Information Act organised by the Press Information Bureau at Thirukkuvalai in Nagapattinam district, the Minister said that a new container terminal would be built at Tuticorin port at a cost of Rs.150 crore that would serve as a regional container hub in south Asia. Besides, a Rs.1,000-core container terminal and Rs.350 crore iron ore terminal will also be established at Ennore near Chennai. A second container terminal is being built at a cost of Rs.491 crore at Chennai port, he said. Mr Baalu pointed out that the Nagapattinam port was being expanded to facilitate fishermen to bring their boats easily to fish landing centres. He said that the Sethusamudram project was going on in full swing and this would be a boon to the fishermen. The Minister said that the National Highways Authority of India took up projects worth Rs.12,250 crores in Tamil Nadu including four-laning of 3,600-km of the 4,500-km stretch of the National Highways in the State. He said the information campaigns should be conducted in all the rural areas so that the people would understand the welfare schemes and projects being implemented by the Centre and by the State.
