Kuchipudi Vijaya
GUNTUR: Kuchipudi Vijaya, ZPTC member from Kollipara mandal, has been named Congress candidate for the Zilla Parishad Chairpersonship. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy made an announcement to this effect in Hyderabad on Friday. Wife of former Chairman of Grandhalaya Samithi Kuchipudi Sambasiva Rao, she defeated her nearest TDP candidate Kancherla Amrutharaju in the ZPTC election from Kollipara by a margin of 6,591 votes. The TDP candidate got 12,841 votes against 19,432 by Congress nominee. It was a foregone conclusion that Ms. Vijaya, former head of Botany Department in Acharya Nagarjuna University, would be nominated, though some MLAs had backed the candidature of Mekathoti Sucharita, wife of an Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax Dayasagar in Guntur. The Vice-Chairperson was likely to be given to one of the two -- Pinelli Ramakrishna Reddy, the Veldurthi ZPTC candidate, who got elected unanimously or Chandu Sambudu from Vemuru. There was, however, severe opposition for either's candidature and DCC president Muppalaneni Seshagiri Rao was likely to settle the issue after consulting leaders here.
Meet APCC chief
Both the chairperson candidates had gone to Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on Friday and met APCC president K. Keshava Rao, who handed over the `B' Form. They later met the Chief Minister. "The Chief Minister talked to Ms. Vijaya and asked her to take along all the ZPTCs in the district for smooth functioning and congratulated her for electoral performance," said Mr. Sambasiva Rao. Narsaraopet MLA Kasu Krishna Reddy had strongly recommended Ms. Sucharita's name and supported by Sattenapalli MLA Yerram Venkateswara Reddy. No dissidence is expected from any quarter over the nomination, as Mr. Sambasiva is a close follower of Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy. The election process on Monday is expected to be smooth affair. Ms. Vijaya said that her first priority would be to improve the conditions in schools and improve the road connectivity, while giving equal importance to all other aspects of development including drinking water.
