DYFI activists protest increase in prices of petrol, diesel

Staff Reporter

Plan to intensify agitation if decision is not reversed

  • Many students' bodies had supported the stir
  • The protesters also demanded reduction in bus fares
  • `Price rise has hit the common man'

Bangalore: Activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) staged a "rasta roko" against the increase in fuel prices, on Friday.

The protest was supported by other student organisations such as the Students Federation of India (SFI).

The activists raised slogans, waved placards and blocked the road near Mysore Bank Circle.

The protesters squatted on the road which obstructed traffic movement for 10 minutes.

The police moved the activists onto the footpath where they continued protesting.

The DYFI demands included immediate rollback of petrol and diesel prices and reduction in bus fares.

They said the increased prices of petrol and diesel last month had greatly affected the common man.

Dhanraj S.H., State secretary, DYFI, said, "even people in villages, mainly farmers, have been affected. Students are facing difficulty with the hike in bus fare. If the Government does not reverse its decisions, we will intensify the protest."

The protesters also drew attention to the fact that the rise in fuel prices had increased the prices of essential commodities as well, which had affected the common man.

"The price rise is too much. The poor in the country are finding it difficult to sustain themselves," remarked Gladys Perreira, a DYFI member.

The DYFI and other organisations plan to continue their protests.

They have organised protests in taluks as well.
