Coimbatore: District Collector Neeraj Mittal said that the Revenue and Public Works Department officials would undertake a detailed investigation relating to encroachments on waterways and water bodies, based on which an action plan would be drafted.

He was talking to newspersons after inspecting canals and water bodies in and around the city on Friday, along with officials from the City Municipal Corporation (CMC), Public Works Department (PWD), Revenue Department and Siruthuli Managing Trustee Vanitha Mohan.

Encroachments

On reaching the Valankulam Tank, the Collector said that 400 out of the nearly 1,000 families that were living along the banks had been provided alternative dwelling units. For the remaining 600-odd families, Mr. Mittal asked the PWD to coordinate with the Revenue Department to provide shelter and then plan removal of encroachments.

Taking note of the debris dumped along the tank, the Collector directed the PWD to take steps to remove them and advised the authorities concerned to take legal action against those found dumping debris along the waterways and water bodies. He also told the officials to exercise constant vigil at night to prevent dumping of chemical waste.

Choked waterways

On inspecting the Ukkadam Big Tank, the Collector advised the Corporation's Engineering Department to prevent drainage water from entering the waterway, since accumulated filth and garbage were preventing the flow of water from the big tank to Valankulam. He also told them to clean the choked waterway.

On noticing soil erosion along the Kurichi Tank, the Collector told the PWD to take steps for strengthening the banks. Mr. Mittal asked the South Tahsildar to initiate measures to remove the encroachments along the waterway from Noyyal to Vellalore and the Rajavaiakkal. He also inspected the River Noyyal near Perur and advised the officials to take steps to prevent the mixing of effluents in the Selvachintamani tank.

Broken bunds

On seeing the broken bunds in the Muthannankulam Tank, the Collector said that in order to prevent water from entering houses in the encroached area, miscreants had broken the bund to prevent the water from accumulating in the tank.

He directed the officials to repair the bund, once the water level subsided, and the PWD to investigate reports of discharge from encroached houses, polluting the tank.

On completion of inspection of tanks, the Collector said that the PWD and Revenue Departments would undertake a detailed investigation of issues relating to widening of the waterways, removal of encroachments, preventing effluents and drainage from flowing into tanks, desilting and strengthening of tank bunds.

Based on the findings, a draft plan would be made and acted upon, he said.
