Month-long campaign launched to control mosquito menace

Teams have been formed to create awareness about chikungunya

Dharmapuri: The Collector, M. Chandrasekaran, on Saturday inaugurated a month-long campaign to control the spread of aedes egypti mosquitoes at Morapur in Dharmapuri district.

The district administration has formed 1,685 teams, including NGOs, elected representatives of local bodies, students and village health nurses to create awareness among the public about chikungunya.

The Collector said the teams would undertake anti-larval measures in all the habitations in the 251 village panchayats, 10 special panchayats and Dharmapuri municipality.

The members would visit households and empty stagnant water in unused tyres, drums, damaged pots, coconut shells and other sources, which served as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

They would also educate the public on keeping the surroundings clean and to change water once in two days. The Collector has asked the public to extend cooperation to the district administration to undertake preventive measures.

The Morapur MLA, V. Mullaivendan, and the Project Officer, DRDA, Mohammed Sheriff, accompanied him.
